Testosterone Therapy Requirements & Options

To ensure safe and effective care, all testosterone therapy patients at NP Empowered Wellness must follow these medical monitoring guidelines:

Initial Visit Required

All clients must complete an initial consultation with our Nurse Practitioner, even if no medication is prescribed.

This visit allows us to:

  • Review your full medical history

  • Discuss your symptoms and goals

  • Determine appropriate next steps for care

  • Ensure safe, individualized recommendations

💡 No prescriptions or treatment plans will be provided without this initial visit.

Your health and safety come first—and that starts with a comprehensive evaluation.

Follow-Up & Commitment Policy

To ensure safe, consistent, and effective care, the following applies to all hormone and wellness therapy plans:

  • Follow-up appointments (in-person or telehealth) are required at least every 8 weeks

  • Labs: Bloodwork must be completed every 8 weeks until your dosage is stable, then every 6 months

  • A minimum 4-month commitment is required for all testosterone treatment plans

💡 Ongoing care allows us to monitor your progress, adjust your treatment as needed, and ensure optimal results.

Your wellness is a journey—and we’re with you every step of the way.

  • Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone, though it’s also present in women in smaller amounts. In men, it’s produced mainly in the testes and plays a vital role in overall health, not just sexual function.

  • Testosterone supports:

    • Sex drive and erectile function

    • Muscle mass and strength

    • Bone density

    • Mood, energy, and motivation

    • Cognitive function and focus

    • Red blood cell production

As men age, testosterone levels naturally decline—often starting in their 30s—and that drop can lead to a variety of symptoms that affect quality of life.

  • When testosterone levels fall below optimal levels, it can lead to:

    • Fatigue and low energy

    • Reduced libido or erectile dysfunction

    • Mood changes, including irritability or depression

    • Loss of muscle mass and increased body fat

    • Difficulty concentrating or memory problems

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) restores levels to a healthy range, helping men feel more like themselves again.

  • ou may be a candidate for TRT if you have:

    • Documented low testosterone on lab work (usually measured in the morning, on two separate occasions)

    • Symptoms of testosterone deficiency, such as low libido, fatigue, mood changes, or muscle loss

    • Age-related decline with no clear cause but significant impact on daily function

At NP Empowered Wellness, we take a personalized, evidence-based approach—TRT is not about “anti-aging,” it’s about restoring balance and improving your health and vitality.

  • While testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) can be highly beneficial for many men, it’s not appropriate for everyone. You may not be a candidate if you have:

    • Prostate cancer or a history of prostate cancer

    • Elevated PSA levels (prostate-specific antigen) without medical clearance

    • Untreated sleep apnea

    • Uncontrolled heart failure

    • Severe lower urinary tract symptoms (e.g., frequent nighttime urination)

    • Hematocrit levels >54% (high red blood cell count)

    • Fertility concerns – TRT can suppress sperm production

⚠️ Testosterone therapy is not a shortcut or anti-aging fix. It requires proper evaluation, regular lab work, and close monitoring.

At NP Empowered Wellness, we follow evidence-based guidelines to ensure that testosterone therapy is safe, medically appropriate, and tailored to your individual needs.

  • We offer FDA-approved testosterone therapies in multiple forms to fit your needs and lifestyle:

    • Topical gel (daily application)

    • Intramuscular injections (weekly or biweekly)

    • Foam (alternative to gel for some patients)

We’ll work with you to determine the best method, dosing, and follow-up plan for optimal results and safety.

  • While there is an FDA-approved testosterone pellet for men, we do not offer pellet placement at NP Empowered Wellness.

    Here’s why:

    • Lack of flexibility — Once inserted, pellets cannot be adjusted, even if side effects or symptoms arise.

    • Higher risk of hormone spikes and crashes, especially early in the dosing cycle.

    • Limited control over dosage adjustments compared to gels, injections, or creams.

We prioritize safe, personalized, and adjustable testosterone therapy options to ensure your treatment evolves with your body’s needs. Our preferred methods include gels, injections, and foams that allow for close monitoring and dosage customization.

Testosterone is a controlled substance regulated by the FDA and requires prescribing by a licensed healthcare provider with an active DEA registration—which I hold as a Nurse Practitioner. As such, ongoing clinical oversight and follow-up care are not optional—they are legally and medically required.

Commitment Options

Depending on how your prescription is dispensed (monthly delivered vs. multi-month order to pharmacy), you will have either a:

  • 4-month commitment, or

  • 12--month commitment
to NP Empowered Wellness for hormone optimization and follow-up care.

Testosterone Therapy Requirements

To ensure your safety and achieve the best possible results, the following protocols must be followed:

Follow-up Appointments:
You are required to meet with your provider at least every 8 weeks for follow-up visits. These check-ins are essential to assess symptoms, make dosage adjustments, and ensure overall well-being.

Lab Monitoring:
Comprehensive lab work is required every 8 weeks until your hormone levels are stable. This helps us make informed decisions about your care and monitor for any potential side effects.

Pharmacy Coordination:
We will send prescriptions to the pharmacy of your choice. Note: All testosterone prescriptions are from licensed, commercial or compound pharmacies only—no research-grade or unregulated sources.

Testosterone Intramuscular or Subcutaneous Injections

Intramuscular or Subcutaneous testosterone injections are used to increase testosterone levels in the body. Testosterone is a vital hormone primarily produced by the gonads (testicles in men and ovaries in women) and plays a key role in energy, mood, muscle mass, and sexual health.

At NP Empowered Wellness, your provider will guide you step-by-step on how to safely prepare and administer this injection at home. You'll receive clear instructions and ongoing support to ensure you're comfortable and confident managing your treatment.

What are some side effects of injectable testosterone?

Testosterone levels can be effectively raised, but not without risks. Testosterone injections can cause many side effects.

Common injectable testosterone side effects include:

  • Injection site reactions, such as pain, bruising, and redness

  • Headache

  • Worsening of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia)

Testosterone can also cause more serious side effects, including:

  • High blood pressure

  • A higher risk for blood clots

  • Increased risk of death from stroke or heart attack

Can testosterone injections cause erectile dysfunction?

No, testosterone injections do not typically cause erectile dysfunction (ED). In fact, they may cause more frequent and longer-lasting erections.

ED is a common symptom of low testosterone. Testosterone replacement therapy has been shown to improve libido, erectile function, and sexual activity. It’s unlikely that testosterone injections would cause ED.
